Koh Phi Phi Island Overviews
A fantastic and remote tropical island on the south of Thailand, Phi Phi Islands has captured the hearts of travellers from every walk of life. This popular tourist destination was made as the site location of the movie, “The Beach”, which was starred by Leonardo Di Caprio. Phi Phi is about 390 square kilometres with both nearby Noppharat Thara Beach and the islands combined and has now been established as a national park.
In about 40 kilometres in radius are also other equally magnificent tourist destinations: Krabi and Phuket. Within the islands is an array of coastal hills that are composed mainly of limestone and is an extension of the limestone mountain range of Phang-nga province. These coastal hills are excitingly steep amidst the large caves and dwarfed trees coming out of rock crevices.
On the other hand, the islands are ideal for hopping, as there are fine beaches and coral formations. Travellers are most welcome for accommodations and make use of above average facilities along the beautiful bays. They may also do diving and snorkelling trips around and nearby islands.
Moreover, a portion of the destination is an uninhabited islet where there is no beach and the water descends bounces immediately back to the sea on all sides. This island is quite mysterious and prohibited. The main attraction is a large cave about 3.2 square kilometers in size known as Viking Cave derived from one of the numerous drawings on the wall which resembles a Viking ship. The cave has a 10 to 15-metre high ceiling which contains many ledges inhabited by thousands of swallows, thus a bird's nest collection demonstration is a regular feature of guided tours.
Best for scenic snorkelling and diving are places in the island called Ao Maya and Ao Lo Sama which are somewhere in the southern part where the waters are deep and full of live coral formations. The emerald crystal sea, remote beaches, breath-taking mountain cliffs, colorful coral reefs and undersea life make the Islands, indeed, the paradise of the Andaman Sea. The months of November and April are the best time to visit, as the sea is calm. Most of the travellers are retirees, honeymooners and lovers.
